Blacksmithing (day 2)

Three things Made at the blacksmithing class on August 5th, 2007: a cold chisel, a flint striker and a heart.

A Heart Welded at the bottom, this heart was finished with Linseed Oil, wax, and love. It now belong to Zohra.

Striker A carbon steel striker for starting fires. We managed to make it work against quartz and a variety of stones. You really have to harden the steel to get it to work.

Chisel Tip The coloring is from the hardening process. It held up to a number of hardy whacks, leaving deep grooves in the metal plate I was chiseling.

Chisel Cracks However, the chisel will be short-lived. Eventually, this crack will fail. I'm not sure if the metal was cracked when I got it, or (more-likely) if I worked it too cold.
