TLR gun trivia
May. 2nd, 2006 11:40 pmSo, I noticed today that every single Thomson TLR badge says on the back "The State of Minnesota issues Concealed Pistol Permits. However, no weapons are allowed on Thomson premises" in giant bold letters. I was amused enough to check my favorite concealed carry website (packing.org) to check on Minnesota's gun laws (of which I was previously fairly ignorant):
*624.714 Subd. 17. POSTING; TRESPASS.* *(a)* A person carrying a firearm on or about his or her person or clothes under a permit or otherwise who remains at a private establishment knowing that the operator of the establishment or its agent has made a reasonable request that firearms not be brought into the establishment may be ordered to leave the premises. A person who fails to leave when so requested is guilty of a petty misdemeanor. The fine for a first offense must not exceed $25. Notwithstanding section 609.531, a firearm carried in violation of this subdivision is not subject to forfeiture. *(b)* As used in this subdivision, the terms in this paragraph have the meanings given. *(1)* "Reasonable request" means a request made under the following circumstances: *(i)* the requester has prominently posted a conspicuous sign at every entrance to the establishment containing the following language: "(INDICATE IDENTITY OF OPERATOR) BANS GUNS IN THESE PREMISES."; or *(ii)* the requester or its agent personally informs the person of the posted request and demands compliance.
I'm not an attorney (yet), but since Thomson doesn't use the correct language (as defined by statute) then they can't even prosecute people for the $25. What I'm really curious about, though, is whether this is intentional or not. TLR stands for Thomson Legal and Regulatory, and the place is made out of lawyers. The fact that all of them would miss this is almost impossible; I actually suspect that the lawyers did this on purpose so that they couldn't be prosecuted for a violation of a policy they didn't like.
Wild.
Other trivia: In Minnesota you must apply for licenses in person, you cannot do it by mail.
