Apr. 22nd, 2006 09:24 pmDrive to Long Island was nearly painless. I had budgeted two hours for the drive and it only took 75 minutes. Luckily, my grandma didn't mind that we were 45 minutes early, so we just chilled at her place until it was time to go. We got her iPod set up and went up to the racetrack.
Grandma and Brad both needed to renew their Horseman's ID cards, so we wandered about the scary cinderblock caves of the racetrack until we found the office. That took like five minutes, so we ran upstairs and sat down for lunch. I spent a lot of time chatting with Brad about his work because I find it very interested, and I just feel this need to help my friends and relatives when they are doing something I approve of.
We watched all eight races at Aqueduct today, and I don't think I've ever done that. The rain was mildly vexing, but overall I had a great time. None of our horses won, although there were some that placed. It was neat to watch the track go from fast to fair, and fair to sealed. If there had been a ninth race today, it would have been sloppy. It didn't seem like it was raining that much, but I think the ground just couldn't take any more.
We went to dinner with Allen, Jimmy, my Grandma and Brad and had a great time. Allen and Jimmy are funny individually, but together (they are father and son) they are just hilarious. We spent all of dinner discussing old movies, places and people they used to know, and why jockey's need to learn to use their left hand.
The drive home was relatively uneventful, just annoying because of all the rain. We got home, and I rushed to let the dog out, but I noticed as I was putting on the leash that he was soaking wet. It looks like the happy Strontzer gnomes came in the night and let the dog out. So Bran went out and pretended to pee and then ran back in; I think he didn't want to disappoint me.
Now I'm pretty tired, so I think it's time to turn in.
