I went on a daytrip to Kingdom Crusades this past Saturday. I drove Darius and Hans since there was no good reason for us all to drive, and Darius is driving next time.

After a short night's sleep, I got up at about 7:00 AM and got ready. I picked up the guys, and we got there at about 10:30 AM. The site was just barely over the border into Maryland, but I guess a lot of people didn't go because of the recent sniper attacks in the D.C. area. We were still at least 45 minutes from D.C., and we were in the absolute middle of nowhere, only the last 5 minutes of the trip was even in Maryland.

In any case, after we went through troll ($15 bucks for a daytrip, oy!) we put our armor on, and got ready for the days festivities. I checked in at the battlefield, and had my armor inspected, then I waited and watched for probably an hour through the champions battles. We won the belted champions, but our unbelts got creamed. I was amazed at how many lefties Atlantia put forward.

But what I *really* noticed, after watching left-handed fighters in almost every bout, was that in the SCA, they can get away with sloppy shield defense that would get any right-handed fighter crushed. There has to be a way to compensate for that when fighting them, perhaps I'll learn some day.

We had three field battles, which we won, hands down. I had a complete blast. I survivied all three battles (a first!). I killed a number of the enemy along the way, which was very satisfying compared to my performance at Pennsic where I barely killed any. The third field battle was quite an experience though.

All of a sudden, I found myself hanging off one flank (our line had wheeled almost 180 degrees) and the enemy was advancing rapidly on my left. I turned to face them, before them mowed me down, and they paused before they engaged. They hesitation saved me. When they engaged me, I thought that was going to be it, but I got a couple got hits in, and got legged. I went down, they looked out, and they were all dead.

Apparently, our line had figured out they were in trouble during the split second while Atlantia paused, and had come to my aid. You can't imagine my surprise when I got down and then looked out. I was the only person alive for a 10 meter radius, our guys had killed all of the guys in front of me and already moved on. The battle was over less than sixty seconds later. What a rush!

After the field battles we had three bridge battles, and we didn't really do so well. I can't really say what went wrong, we just seemed to use up all of our spears before we knew what happened.

We had two fortification battles, and they were so strange I'm not going to try and describe them fully, but I'll just say that we won and all of us celebrated that the fighting was over.
