So, apparently the violent crime is soaring in New Haven. There have been a number of gun buybacks, and general attempts by the DeStefano administration to disarm local citizens. However, I'm sure that this has absolutely nothing to do with New Haven's problems:

A quote from the linked article which seems germane given the icon:
"City Hall is sponsoring workshops to help illegal immigrants file federal income taxes. "

See, it's like legalization of drugs. Once they start paying taxes, they're not the problem anymore.

How do you file federal income taxes without a SSN? Or are they filing their returns using someone else's SSN? Seriously, do people really not get this?

Is it okay to break the laws of this country as long as you pay your taxes? If so, I've got a list I'd like to break right here!

I think there are lot more problems with the illegal population than just their tax avoidance, and I can't believe that people (apparently the citizens of New Haven) think that this is acceptable.

I honestly don't know how you pay taxes without a SSN. Are you sure that there isn't some kind of a "SSN for illegals" program? :)

I'm just pointing out that the article says it's happening, and that if it works, you'll begin hearing about it as part of the "be soft on illegals" rhetoric.

I'm really freakin' liberal

but dear g-d! What is wrong with that idiot?!

Let's see, we offering safe haven to people who can't be tracked and now have nothing to fear from police and are desperate, poor and probably deeply in debt to violent felons.

If we treat them nicely, while others treat them as tho' they were here illegally, they are likey to;
a) clump here and bring everyone they know also and do anything they can to pay off the coyotes and snakeheads inculding violent crime
b) realize we're super nice, and be super nice in return
c) go somewhere else so they won't burden the nice people

Tricky. Very very tricky. I can see how deStupido got confused about how this would turn out.

Excellent points...

I personally have no problem with the government asking for ID in exchange for services. We can talk about banks and hospitals, but the government? The taxpayers of this country are absolutely paying for these services and why should illegals get them for free?

What does this article say except that illegals bring crime with them? And how do you "target" illegals? If you wander around New Haven asking everyone on the street for ID, I doubt you'd make it ten minutes before somebody kicked your ass.

Of course not, you just go to neighborhoods that have been run into the ground by social programs and guess that some large percentage of the Spanish-speaking residents are illegal. Since the illegals are already up a creek without a paddle if they get caught by the cops, what incentive to they have to abide by the weapon-control laws designed to protect them from the evil White Man?

The whole thing pisses me off. If you want to be a citizen of this country, wait in line. My ancestors did, and so did many of my friends. I can't even imagine what this country would be like today if we had 10 million more people like the legal immigrants I know instead of the horde of criminals we have instead.
