I auditioned for the York College Community Orchestra last night.

I did a few scales, some intervals "ah...AH....ah", oh, you mean the octave? Then I played the second movement of Holst's 1st Suite in E-flat for Military Band. I attempted Deep River after that, but made it about halfway through before my audition jitters took over. It was so awful I could barely play.

:-(

I haven't done an audition since 1994, and I forgot how nervous I get when doing them. I was fine, and then "wham!" it was like "Odd, I'm getting nervous." I think if I had gone into the audition on time, maybe it would be been better, but Mel was running behind.

I told him that the best way for me to get through auditions is to get the whole thing over with before I get too nervous. I learned Deep River when I was 14 years old. But, you would think that I had never seen a trumpet before by the time I got halfway through it. Ah well.

So the orchestra starts rehearsals next Tuesday. I'm expecting that Ivan will probably get principal because he's been the the organization for a long time, and you would have to be insane to make me principal after that audition. That does not bother me too much; I just hope that I can pull this together and become a decent trumpet player again.

Taking eleven years off seemed like a good idea at the time. I was so burned out from the University of Michigan Marching Band that I scarcely wanted to look at a trumpet again. In the last few years, however, it has become entirely clear that I needed to add music back into my life. I crave it.

Really cool that you had a chance to atleast audition Nathan! I mean, afterall, it's just a matter of shaking off some of the rust and getting back into the swing of things. No matter what, the talent and skills are always gonna be there.. just need to brush them up, that's all. ^^

Congrats.. takes lots of motivation and guts to do something like that. More often than not, most will just.. stay the course and continue to ignore something like this. :)
