Today's Internet Find
May. 28th, 2005 07:49 pmToday, I was looking for webcam softare for my iSight, and I found a software shop that makes webcam shareware for the Mac which is compatible with the iSight. It turns out that they actually make software to use the iSight as a barcode scanner as well. This got me thinking about my book collection, which
zohra and I have been thinking about inventorying for a long time.
I downloaded it, but we've only used the webcam portion so far. I then went on the 'net to see if I could find any quick pointers on automating this process. As it happens, the first Google site turned out to be the authoritative site on building a database of your personal book collection using a barcode scanner.
After that, I also found a shareware package written in Java (yay! portable!) called ReaderWare which will automatically talk to your barcode scanner, and look up the results on the various Internet ISBN databases. I looked up a few books, and I'm pretty hooked.
I'm going to try the iSight barcode scanning software and see how it goes, but I'm totally jazzed.
