Today was good.

I took it easy this morning for the most part, trying to avoid the ridiculous 96 degree heat as much as possible. Even Bran was more than eager to come in the house after only three minutes outside.

I learned a bunch of things about Roman Standards (the banner-like things that the legions carried around, similar to modern colors). There were five different kinds, ranging from "spiritual object" to "spear with flag on the end". For the Roman Court we're going to need 8 standards, but I'm going to get help from Jim making them. He has access to a laser cutting machine and should be able to cut much of the weird shapes that we need. Pretty much all of this is absolutely useless in the mundane world, but it was sure fun learning it.

I had a great time with our new family (i.e. our really close local friends) this evening at the 4th cookout at Rhiannon and Harold's place. They are a lot of fun, and Jim, Connie, Phil, Bryan and Leah were there. Bryan spent the entire time cooking, there was chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled veggies and even a steak. We didn't even come close to eating half.

It was the most painless and truly joyful holiday that I remember having.
