On how "lax" the Illinois standards are? I certainly hope not. I think Illinois gets a "A-" from the Brady Campaign. That hardly seems lax to me, and I think even the Brady's would be foolish to bite the hand that takes away the guns.
In Illinois, the guy really was obligated to get the license, since the cops really do show up at people's houses and demand to see their FOIDs. Several well-known athletes and celebrities have been fined or imprisoned for possession of firearms without a FOID (usually within days of their expiration).
The insanity of the whole situation is that a 10-month old should need a license to own a firearm. Although you need a license to operate an airplane, or a radio transmitter, or a car, you don't need a license to own any of those things. It's madness.
Also, the confiscation crew hardly cares what the facts are: they will continue to say whatever they need to say to get what they what. The importance is that the voters figure out how much of it is true and how much is garbage.
Is a law restricting you to buying one handgun per month going to make your neighbors safer? How?
That penultimate paragraph holds the core of my concern. Illinois getting an A- doesn't help the confiscator's cause, but A Ten Month Old Getting A License might, you see, if accompanied by the appropriate amount of handwringing.
Assuming your last paragraph wasn't meant to be rhetorical, the obvious answer is that the way in which it'll make my neighbors safer is that it makes it harder for me to legally purchase so many handguns that their combined weight cracks the crust of the earth beneath my house. See? Our lawmakers are protecting us ;]
