Pennsic

Aug. 23rd, 2004 06:33 am
I had a great time at Pennsic. It was wierd to be there and not have to be a slave for anyone. Quite a few people did double-takes when they saw my belt: apparently, there were a few people in the Knowne Worlde that didn't know I was no longer a squire. I tried to shrug it off.

The first fighting was the 15-man unbelted melee. It was awesome because the East Kingdom had two teams, and all of the unbelted fighters got to fight. I fought in three rounds, and got one kill. That's not so great, but I only died once, too.

The next day was the field battles. I fought with the Northern Army folks, and my unit consisted of Federoch (command), Temair, Sir Thomas, and myself. We did some serious damage in all three battles, and at least one time I stood with Sir Thomas at the other end of the field screaming "Where's the meat!?!" It was nice. After that was the Heroic Bridge Battle, the belted champions battle, and the unbelted champions, none of which I was selected for. I didn't see either of the champions field battles, but the Heroic Bridge was a horrific mess. I think three people were carried off on back-boards.

On Tuesday morning, we fought the woods battle. I only died twice (it's a resurrection battle), but I didn't get too many kills. I did run into Baron Straum (Cynnabar) while we were in a hold though, and I had a nice chat with him about when I lived back there. We took and held all three banners, but had one of the most boring strategies ever. We stood at the top of the hill and waiting for the Midrealm to come up and get us. That meant that I spent most of two hours standing around and looking fierce.

Wednesday was the bridge battles, which I normally despise, but which were really fun. We fought three 30-minute battles with no resurrection, and I only died in the second one. In the third battle, we actually killed the entire Midrealm army in about 25 minutes, so I was left standing on a bridge with two other guys by ourselves waiting for time to be up. I got about 15 kills, I think, in the final presses at the end of the first two bridges. We would pack in to drive them off the bridge, and once we were crushed, having a sword was the place to be. I was clubbing polearms and spears left and right like baby seals.

Next year, I would like to do some of the 1x1 tournaments, but this year I just didn't have the energy for it. Ah well.
...blue-blade, pearl-handled, adjustable, both-blades-on-the-same-side POLEARM, so when I whack you once, you gonna yell "good" twice...
